The Story of

ROKUJUAN

Located in the center of Kyoto city, discover a pure Japanese-style building with an elegant appearance and a beautiful garden that will make you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

Spend a unforgettable moment at the Kubo Family Residence (former Imao Keinen Residence), a tangible cultural property that has been preserved for over 100 years.

Imao Keitoshi was a Japanese-style painter of the Shijo school who was active from the Meiji era to the Taisho era in Japan. While working on rough sketches for textiles, he excelled at colorful bird-and-flower paintings, and his realistic style became famous over Japan.

At the 18th year of the Meiji Era (1885), he exhibited « One Hundred Varieties of Remaining Things » and was awarded the first gold medal. His most emblematic work is Nanzenji temple’s « Unryu-zu »painting.
